Hand Lettered Signs
I first began making hand lettered signs for Mr Sketch’s birthday back in the summer of 2015. We had a Glastonbury festival themed party in our back garden and I made a set of wooden signs as decoration.
Subsequently, I had a few requests for personalised hand lettered signs, and after practicing my lettering and experimenting with different colours, I started selling them online.
All of my hand lettered signs were made from wood sourced locally around Cornwall. I used pallets, scaffolding planks, oak flooring, driftwood – basically anything we could scavenge – sticking to the Mister Sketch Makes philosophy of ‘Reclaimed Reused Recycled’ wherever possible.
Everything was individually painted and by hand, meaning no two hand lettered signs were ever exactly the same. I mostly used emulsion paint because of the almost infinite range of colours available.
I enjoyed my sign making enormously, but as is the way with making money from a hobby, it got slightly repetitive and I was soon looking around for new projects.
